Humans

Humans are the most widespread and historically dominant race on Earth. Throughout history, they have founded great civilizations, developed science and technology, produced countless forms of art and culture, and played the largest role in shaping the modern world. In Gravesbury Park, humans continue to make up the majority of the population and are generally highly social beings who value friendship, community, companionship, and meaningful relationships. They increasingly interact and form connections with the supernatural races that now openly share their world.

Life as a human in Gravesbury Park can take almost any direction you choose. You might join the bowling league at the world-famous Gravesbury Lanes, start your own business or rent a storefront, write for the Gravesbury Gazette as a journalist or editor, become a DJ at the local radio station WGRV, serve with the Gravesbury Park Police Department, or pursue a career in medicine at the local hospital. There is also no shortage of entertainment. Residents can ride the legendary Speed Demon rollercoaster, take a spin on the enormous Ferris wheel, catch a film at the Roxy Cinema, enjoy the undersea-themed carousel, visit the Paranormal Museum, or take part in the town ghost tour.

The Darker Side of Human Life

Of course, not every human in Gravesbury Park chooses a respectable career or an ordinary life. Just as humans can become doctors, journalists, police officers, business owners, and other pillars of the community, they can also find themselves drawn toward occupations and lifestyles that are considerably darker, stranger, or more morally ambiguous.

Some humans make their living among the dead. The town's morgue employs morticians, medical examiners, funeral professionals, and other workers who spend their days dealing with the recently deceased. Others work as gravediggers and caretakers at Gravesbury Park's historic cemetery, tending the graves of generations of residents and maintaining the grounds surrounding them. For humans with an interest in the macabre, these professions can provide a fascinating connection to the city's history—and, in Gravesbury Park, sometimes bring them into proximity with supernatural phenomena that ordinary mortals rarely encounter.

Others pursue careers in the town's adult entertainment industry. Exotic dancers may perform at the local adult club Nocturne, while escorts can make a living providing companionship and intimate services to clients. Some work independently, while others become regular performers or staff members at Nocturne. As with every other profession in Gravesbury, these occupations are simply another part of the town's diverse human community, and individual humans may enter them for financial reasons, personal choice, enjoyment, or a combination of all three.

There are also humans who deliberately step outside the boundaries of the law. Gravesbury's criminal underworld includes humans involved in everything from drug dealing and organized crime to burglary, fraud, money laundering, smuggling, and other illicit activities.

Human criminality can sometimes become especially complicated in a town where supernatural beings openly live alongside mortals. Criminal enterprises may involve vampires, witches, fae, shifters, or other supernatural races, while certain humans may attempt to exploit supernatural abilities, magical artifacts, or connections to the supernatural underworld for their own gain.

These darker paths are by no means representative of humanity as a whole. Most humans in Gravesbury Park live ordinary lives, work legitimate jobs, maintain families and friendships, and contribute positively to their communities. Nevertheless, humans possess the same capacity for ambition, temptation, greed, rebellion, and moral corruption as any other sentient race. In Gravesbury Park, that means humanity can be found everywhere—from the hospital and PD to the cemetery, the nightclub, and the criminal underworld.

Music, Art, and Alternative Culture

Gravesbury Park has long been celebrated for its thriving live music and arts scene, with a particular reputation for embracing alternative, underground, and countercultural forms of creativity. Music, visual art, fashion, and other forms of self-expression are deeply woven into the city's identity, attracting artists, musicians, performers, and unconventional personalities from both the human and supernatural communities.

The Smash Art Gallery is one of Gravesbury's best-known artistic institutions, providing a space for local and visiting artists to exhibit their work. The gallery has become an important gathering place for Gravesbury's artistic community and a reflection of the town's willingness to embrace creative individuality.

Gravesbury Lanes is another important part of the town's cultural landscape. Although best known as a legendary bowling establishment and arcade, the venue also regularly hosts live music performances, art shows, and other creative events. Its combination of entertainment, socializing, and artistic expression has made it a popular meeting place for residents from all walks of life.

Few places, however, are as closely associated with Gravesbury Park's alternative music heritage as Klub Kerosene. The iconic underground club has earned legendary status for its long history of hosting some of the most famous, celebrated, and influential acts from the punk and goth rock scenes. Over the years, musicians who went on to become major names within their respective scenes have graced its stage, giving Klub Kerosene a reputation that extends far beyond Gravesbury Park itself.

The club's legacy remains alive today. Klub Kerosene continues to host a steady stream of live bands and performers, while DJs regularly take over the decks to spin punk, goth, post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, industrial, alternative, and other underground sounds. For musicians and fans alike, playing or seeing a show at Klub Kerosene is considered part of experiencing Gravesbury's musical heritage. The club remains a gathering place for people who prefer their music loud, unconventional, and unapologetically outside the mainstream.

Gravesbury's alternative culture extends beyond music and galleries. The town's skate park has become another popular meeting point for skaters, punks, and other members of the alternative community, providing a place to practice, socialize, and spend time with like-minded people. Likewise, the local tattoo parlor serves not only as a place to get body art but as a social hub for residents who embrace alternative fashion, subcultures, body modification, and unconventional forms of self-expression.

Together, Gravesbury Park's galleries, music venues, skate parks, tattoo parlors, clubs, and other creative spaces have helped establish the city as a haven for artists, musicians, punks, goths, skaters, performers, and other people who prefer to live outside conventional expectations. Whether someone is picking up a paintbrush, stepping onto a stage, dropping the needle on a record, getting a new tattoo, or simply looking for somewhere to belong, Gravesbury Park has always had a place for those who choose to express themselves differently.

LGBTQIA+ Life and Culture

Gravesbury Park is particularly well known for its vibrant, culturally diverse, and highly creative LGBTQIA+ community. Queer life is an active and highly visible part of the town's culture, with LGBTQIA+ residents contributing to virtually every aspect of Gravesbury's social, artistic, musical, and nightlife scenes. The town has developed a reputation as a place where people of different sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and approaches to relationships can find community, friendship, acceptance, and opportunities to express themselves openly.

One of the most popular gathering places is The Nightingale, a lively queer cabaret/dance club/disco renowned for its energetic atmosphere and inclusive spirit. The club regularly hosts spectacular drag shows featuring local performers, alongside DJs spinning everything from pop and dance music to electronic, disco, house, alternative, and other high-energy styles. On any given night, the dance floor can be filled with people of all kinds coming together to socialize, flirt, celebrate, and dance the night away. The Nightingale has become an important part of Gravesbury Park's queer nightlife and a place where individuality and self-expression are actively encouraged.

Gravesbury is also home to businesses that reflect the town's appreciation for queer creativity and gender expression. One popular beauty salon is owned and operated by a local drag queen. The town's LGBTQIA+-friendly culture extends into its adult-oriented businesses as well. Gravesbury is home to a sex-positive adult shop with a distinctly LGBTQIA+-positive atmosphere. The establishment welcomes customers of all sexual orientations and its inventory and culture accommodate a broad range of interests, including various kinks and fetishes, while its staff are known for being knowledgeable, open-minded, nonjudgmental, and comfortable discussing sexuality with their customers.

Together, places like the Nightingale, Hostile Makeover beauty salon, and Gravesbury's sex-positive businesses contribute to the city's reputation as a colorful and accepting home for LGBTQIA+ people. Whether expressed through drag, music, fashion, nightlife, art, relationships, or simply the freedom to live openly, queer culture is an unmistakable and celebrated part of life in Gravesbury Park.

Humans and the Supernatural

For most humans, the supernatural remains invisible unless it chooses to reveal itself. The majority cannot naturally perceive ghosts, although a small number are born with the extraordinarily uncommon ability known as spirit sight. Those possessing this gift may be able to see, hear, or even communicate with the dead. Anyone who discovers that they have such abilities is strongly advised to seek guidance from an experienced witch rather than attempting to contact spirits without assistance. The spirit world is not limited to harmless human ghosts; there are also malevolent entities that were never human and, indeed, were never alive in the conventional sense.

Humans also continue to hold the greatest amount of political and legal authority in Gravesbury and across much of the mortal world. As the primary lawmakers, human governments have enormous influence over the rights, freedoms, and privileges afforded to every resident, regardless of species. This authority has not always been accepted without resistance. Several supernatural races possess their own governments, traditions, and systems of law, sometimes creating complicated relationships with mortal authorities.

The Seelie and Unseelie Fae Courts are perhaps the most prominent example. The fae have historically been reluctant to place themselves entirely beneath mortal jurisdiction, insisting upon the right to govern their own kind according to ancient traditions. Rather than attempting to completely abolish this autonomy, human authorities have learned to negotiate with the Courts, permitting the fae considerable freedom to maintain their monarchies and internal laws while requiring them to observe certain fundamental laws governing the mortal world.

Vampires have presented an entirely different set of challenges. Often unwilling to accept ordinary human restrictions, vampire society has nevertheless made a number of compromises in the interests of peaceful coexistence. Humans, in turn, have developed systems specifically intended to accommodate legitimate vampire needs while reducing conflict between the species.

Two particularly unusual ways in which humans assist the vampire population are Gravesbury Park's hospital blood-bank program and Blood Dolls. Vampires who have difficulty locating willing donors can enroll in the program and receive scheduled IV blood bags twice each month. Human medical science has also undergone enormous changes as supernatural populations have become an accepted part of society, with doctors, nurses, and researchers developing new practices to address the unusual biological and supernatural requirements of vampires, fae, shifters, witches, and other races.

Blood Dolls are humans who actively seek out the intimate act of being fed on by vampires, whether out of personal desire for the experience of it, or to help out a vampire friend of theirs. They will serve one vampire in particular, or possibly more than one vampire as some vampires are fine with sharing their blood dolls with others, and become that vampire’s reliable, repeated source of fresh blood straight from the vein. Sometimes these Blood Doll relationships become intimate, sexual or romantic in nature, and other times they are just partnerships, friendships or something even more removed from social or emotional bonding of any kind. Sometimes a vampire regards its blood doll as a “thing” rather than a person with complex feelings and thoughts and desires. They see them as only there to serve as a fresh source of vitae, a living blood-bag.

Despite this growing spirit of cooperation, not every human welcomes the supernatural presence in their world. A small but particularly dangerous minority have become known as hunters. These individuals actively seek out supernatural beings, sometimes capturing, interrogating, imprisoning, or even harming vampires, witches, fae, shifters, ghosts, and extraterrestrial visitors. Fortunately, such extremists remain a relatively small portion of the human population.

For the overwhelming majority of Gravesbury Park's human residents, the future lies in adaptation rather than conflict. Humans are learning to coexist with beings their ancestors regarded as monsters, legends, spirits, or creatures of folklore. In Gravesbury Park, vampires, fae, witches, ghosts, shifters, and other supernatural races are no longer merely subjects of myth and superstition—they are neighbors, coworkers, friends, lovers, business owners, and fellow citizens. The human experience in Gravesbury Park is ultimately one of learning how to share a world that has turned out to be far stranger, and far more magical, than humanity ever imagined.
