Vampires of
Gravesbury Park
Vampires have been a hidden part of Gravesbury Park's history for centuries, with some vampire families and covens tracing their presence in the town back to the 1800s. For generations they lived largely in secrecy, allowing humans to interpret their existence through folklore, superstition, horror stories, and sensationalized rumors.
That changed in 1975, when Gravesbury's vampire population publicly acknowledged its existence to human society.
Since then, the vampires' primary public spokesperson has been Tindr Tryggstad (aka Xander Cox) the eldest living vampire in Gravesbury and the vampire who has resided in the town the longest, having arrived sometime during the 18th century. Because of his extraordinary age, experience, and longstanding relationships with both supernatural and human communities, he became the unofficial public face of Gravesbury's vampires.
His role is not that of a king or ruler. Rather, he acts as a mentor, mediator, historian, and representative, frequently helping younger vampires navigate conflicts with humans, other vampires, witches, fae, shifters, and other non-human races.

The VAMPR Initiative
The VAMPR Initiative — Vampire Advocacy, Media & Public Relations, an organization founded by Gravesbury’s eldest vampire Tindr Tryggstad, aka Xander Cox exists primarily to improve relations between vampires and the wider Gravesbury community and to combat misinformation about vampire society. It's members:
- Speak with newspapers, television networks, radio programs, and online media.
- Appear on television interviews and web-based podcasts.
- Explain actual vampire customs, biology, abilities, and limitations.
- Challenge harmful stereotypes and sensationalized vampire myths.
- Promote peaceful coexistence between vampires, humans, and other supernatural races.
- Provide information to vampire allies and human organizations that work with vampire communities.
- Encourage responsible and consensual feeding practices.
- Acknowledge vampire crimes and misconduct rather than pretending that every vampire is inherently benevolent.
The VAMP Initiative is particularly vocal about one misconception: that vampires universally prey upon unwilling human victims. That is not considered normal or respectable behavior within mainstream vampire society.
Vampire Society
There is no formal vampire hierarchy in Gravesbury Park. The eldest vampire does not make laws for other vampires, command vampire communities, or possess authority to punish vampires simply because they disagree with him. Vampires are independent beings who ultimately make their own choices and Xander respects that. His influence comes from respect rather than legal authority. Younger vampires frequently seek his advice regarding:
- Disputes between vampires.
- Conflicts with humans.
- Relationships with other supernatural races.
- Feeding problems.
- Difficult ethical situations.
- Questions about vampire traditions and history.
- Conflicts between different nests or covens.
The Elder is regarded more as a teacher, counselor, and mediator than a ruler.
Nests and Covens
Vampires commonly organize themselves into nests or covens.
A nest may consist of vampires who live together, socialize regularly, feed together, protect one another, or simply consider themselves a close-knit community. Covens can be more traditional and may place greater emphasis on shared customs, rituals, history, and vampire culture.
Different groups can have radically different values.
Most vampire communities consider attacking unwilling victims, forcibly feeding, and draining someone to death deeply reprehensible. Vampires who repeatedly engage in such behavior are often expelled from their nests or covens.
However, there is no universal vampire government preventing such vampires from forming their own communities. A nest or coven composed entirely of vampires who approve of predatory feeding may continue to operate according to its own beliefs.
Consequently, vampires are no different from any other intelligent race:
There are good vampires, bad vampires, compassionate vampires, selfish vampires, violent vampires, and everything in between.
The VAMPR Initiative does not deny this. Instead, it emphasizes that the existence of dangerous vampires does not mean that vampires as a whole are dangerous.
Innate Vampire Abilities
Vampires possess a variety of supernatural abilities that are intrinsic to their species.
Transformation
Can transform between their humanoid vampire form and a bat form. Bat form allows them to fly. Once they transform back to vampire form, they can still have bat wings on their back for about 4 hours following shifting out of bat form. They can fly with these wings on their back as well.
Glamour
Vampires can use a supernatural form of hypnotic influence called glamour. Glamour allows them to influence or control the thoughts, perceptions, and actions of humans. Some supernatural beings can also be affected. The effectiveness of glamour varies according to the target's nature and resistance, or whether they wear a protective talisman blocking the effects of glamour on them.
Telepathy
Vampires can project their thoughts directly into the minds of other vampires, regardless of distance or personal relationship. They can also communicate telepathically with humans and other supernatural beings with whom they share a deep emotional or supernatural bond. Ordinary strangers generally cannot receive a vampire's thoughts telepathically.
Physical Superiority
Vampires possess:
- Superhuman strength.
- Superhuman speed.
- Superhuman hearing.
- Exceptional reflexes.
- Excellent physical coordination.
- Perfect vision in darkness.
Accelerated healing
Instantaneous Healing: Whenever a vampire gets injured to any extent, their wounds will heal over within 2 minutes or sometimes less. This can apply to when they are burned by fire, even if they are burned all over their body, their flesh will heal within 10 minutes of being burned extensively. They can also seal up puncture wounds to a person they feed from by swiping their tongue over the area of the wound, as their saliva has healing properties, although only to small wounds like that.
Wall-Crawling
Vampires can cling to and climb walls and ceilings much like spiders, allowing them to move vertically across surfaces without ordinary climbing equipment.
Bat-Like Rest
They can hang upside down from ceilings, rafters, trees, caves, or other elevated surfaces and sleep while hanging in this position, much like bats.
Taking Mist Form
Vampires can transform into pure mist and move around in this form of matter
Immortality
Vampires do not age naturally and are effectively immortal. However, immortality does not mean invulnerability. A vampire can be killed through:
- A wooden or otherwise effective stake through the heart.
- Silver bullets.
- Silver arrows.
- Beheading.
More on Vampire Glamour
Glamour is one of the most powerful supernatural abilities possessed by vampires, allowing them to manipulate, and alter the memories and perceptions of other beings. Unlike faerie glamour, which changes how a faerie appears, vampire glamour works directly upon the mind. A vampire establishes an intense, unbroken gaze with their target, staring into their eyes and holding that connection long enough for their supernatural influence to take hold. Once the victim falls under the vampire's control, the vampire can implant suggestions, alter memories, suppress recollections, or convince the person that something happened—or did not happen. A vampire might make someone forget being bitten, believe they willingly invited the vampire inside, remember an entirely different version of an encounter, or simply disregard suspicious events. The suggestions generally serve the vampire's interests, allowing them to manipulate situations while concealing their true nature.
The strength of a vampire's glamour is heavily influenced by age and power. The older a vampire becomes, the stronger, deeper, and more effective their Glamouring ability tends to be. Ancient vampires can exert tremendous control over the minds of others and may be capable of overcoming resistance that would easily defeat a younger vampire. Humans, witches, shifters, and some fae can all potentially fall victim to vampire glamour, although their natural resistance varies. Most fae possess a strong enough supernatural nature to resist ordinary vampire glamour, making them considerably more difficult to influence. However, even fae are not completely immune: an exceptionally ancient and powerful vampire may possess enough supernatural strength to overwhelm their defenses and bring them under the vampire's control.
Certain beings are completely immune to vampire glamour. Aliens from other planets or dimensions cannot be glamoured, even when they possess bodies and minds remarkably similar to humans. Ghosts and other incorporeal spirits are likewise unaffected. Attempts to glamour even highly human-like extraterrestrials will generally fail because their minds and supernatural biology operate on principles fundamentally different from those of humans and Earth-born supernatural beings.
Vampires frequently use glamour to conceal their crimes and protect the secrecy of their existence. A vampire who feeds upon someone without consent can glamour the victim into forgetting the encounter, believing they merely fainted, or remembering an innocent explanation for the wounds. If a victim is drained completely and dies, the vampire may glamour witnesses, friends, authorities, or even entire groups of people to create a false version of events and prevent anyone from discovering the truth. Glamour can therefore be an essential tool in maintaining the masquerade and allowing predatory vampires to operate among mortal society without consequence.
However, glamour is not limitless or infallible. A vampire's ability to influence others depends upon their physical condition, mental focus, stamina, magical strength, and how recently and adequately they have fed. A well-fed vampire at the height of their strength can produce far more powerful glamour than one who is starving, weakened, injured, or exhausted. The less a vampire feeds on blood, the weaker their glamour becomes, and prolonged hunger can eventually make the ability unreliable or nearly useless. Repeatedly Glamouring multiple people in a short period can also drain a vampire's energy, making subsequent attempts progressively more difficult. Thus, while vampire glamour can be an extraordinarily powerful weapon of manipulation, its effectiveness ultimately depends upon the strength, age, and condition of the vampire wielding it.
Note: When Rping as a vampire glamouring someone, the other player or players being glamoured must consent OOCly to the act within the RP scenario. This is a very important rule to follow.
Vampire Feeding
Blood, or vitae, is the only substance a vampire can truly sustain themselves upon. Most vampires prefer consensual feeding, in which another person willingly offers their blood. A donor might allow a vampire to feed for many different reasons:
- Romantic intimacy
- Erotic attraction
- Love
- Friendship
- Trust
- Companionship
- A desire to help a vampire they care about
- Personal fascination with vampires
- A mutually beneficial relationship between vampire and donor
For many vampires, feeding is an intimate experience because allowing someone access to one's vitae requires considerable trust. Vampires can feed from:
- Humans
- Animals
- Fae
- Shifters
- Witches
- Other vampires
- Some interdimensional species (not extra-terrestrials). Ex: Nordics.
Different kinds of blood can have different tastes, qualities, and effects, and individual vampires often develop personal preferences.
Blood Deprivation
A vampire can survive without feeding for a surprisingly long time, but doing so becomes increasingly dangerous.
After approximately two weeks without blood, a vampire begins becoming severely blood-crazed.
The condition resembles extreme withdrawal from a powerful narcotic. The vampire may become:
• Emotionally unstable.
• Irritable and aggressive.
• Obsessive about blood.
• Impulsive and reckless.
• Paranoid.
• Erratic and unpredictable.
• Increasingly unable to resist the urge to feed.
The longer deprivation continues, the worse the condition becomes.
Eventually, a starving vampire may become genuinely dangerous. They may lose their ability to maintain their normal ethical boundaries and attack someone against their will. A severely blood-starved vampire may also drink far too much and accidentally kill their victim through overfeeding.
This is one reason responsible vampires make regular feeding arrangements rather than attempting to abstain indefinitely.
Vampire Weaknesses & Limitations
Despite their considerable abilities, vampires have important limitations.
Residence Invitation
A vampire cannot enter a private residence without express permission from someone currently inside. The person granting permission does not have to own the property. A tenant, guest, roommate, family member, or other person legitimately inside the residence can give permission.
This restriction applies specifically to private residences. Businesses, shops, clubs, restaurants, offices, and other commercial or public establishments are not subject to the invitation rule.
Blood Is Their Only Food
Vampires cannot properly eat or digest ordinary food or beverages. They can consume blood from virtually any compatible living species, but things such as:
- Food
- Water
- Alcohol
- Soft drinks
- Coffee
- Juice
- Medication mixed into food or drink
cannot be metabolized as nourishment. A vampire can temporarily keep ordinary food or drink in their digestive system, but after approximately two hours, their body will reject it and they must purge it by vomiting.
Blood Dependency
Blood is not simply a preference for vampires. It is a biological necessity. Going without it for too long causes blood-crazed withdrawal, potentially transforming an otherwise peaceful vampire into a dangerous and irrational individual.
Vampires and Sunlight
Sunlight is one of the greatest weaknesses of vampires in Gravesbury Park. Direct exposure to the sun is extremely dangerous to their bodies, causing their skin to burn, blister, and deteriorate the longer they remain exposed. A vampire can withstand brief periods in sunlight, but after approximately twenty minutes of continuous exposure, the damage becomes potentially fatal. If they remain exposed beyond that point, their bodies will continue to burn until they are eventually consumed by the sunlight and die. For this reason, vampires generally avoid being outdoors during daylight hours whenever possible.
Vampires who must venture outside during the day can take precautions to protect themselves. They may cover their entire bodies with heavy robes, coats, or other dark, protective clothing, leaving as little skin exposed as possible. Many also wear masks, scarves, or bandanas over their mouths and faces to provide additional protection. Large umbrellas, parasols, and wide-brimmed hats can also be used to keep the sun from directly touching their skin. These measures can significantly extend the amount of time a vampire can safely spend outdoors, but they are not considered a permanent substitute for avoiding direct sunlight.
Fortunately, Gravesbury Park's extensive underground tunnel network provides vampires with another means of traveling during daylight hours. The tunnels run beneath various parts of the town and connect to several important locations, allowing vampires to move from one area to another without exposing themselves to the sun. Many vampire residents consider the tunnels an essential part of daily life, particularly during the daytime.
There is, however, one extraordinary means of overcoming a vampire's vulnerability to sunlight:
Sun rings
These enchanted rings can be crafted by sufficiently skilled witches and fae, using powerful protective magic capable of shielding a vampire from the harmful effects of the sun. A vampire wearing a properly enchanted sun ring can walk beneath the daylight without burning, making it possible for them to travel freely during the day.
Sun rings are extremely rare and highly sought after. They require considerable magical skill and uncommon materials to create, and only a limited number of witches and fae possess the knowledge necessary to craft them. Because of their rarity and the enormous advantage they provide, sun rings are usually very expensive, placing them beyond the reach of most vampires. Those fortunate enough to possess one are often considered exceptionally privileged within the vampire community.
Common Vampire Myths
The VAMPR Initiative spends considerable time correcting centuries of misinformation.
X Garlic Does Not Harm Vampires
Contrary to popular folklore, vampires are not allergic to garlic and garlic does not burn, poison, repel, or otherwise weaken them. A vampire can eat garlic—although they cannot digest the food itself.
* Vampires Do Appear in Mirrors
Vampires have reflections. The idea that they cannot be seen in mirrors is simply an old superstition.
- Photographs.
- Film.
- Television.
- Security cameras.
- Digital recordings.
- Video calls.
- Livestreams.
* Vampires Appear in Photographs and Recordings
X Vampires Cannot Fly in Human Form
A vampire cannot simply float through the air while humanoid. Flight is possible only after transforming into realistic bat form (under 7 foot wingspan) or with fully formed bat wings (up to 3 hours after transformation from bat to vampire)
* Vampires Can Smoke and Use Drugs
Vampires can smoke cigarettes, cannabis, and other substances, and can ingest recreational or medicinal drugs. Unlike ordinary food, many drugs can affect vampires, meaning they can experience their full intoxicating or psychoactive effects. This has created its own niche of vampire subcultures involving smoking, recreational drug use, nightlife, and other activities.
* Vampires Can Ejaculate Normally
Vampire sexual physiology is another source of folklore. Male vampires can produce and ejaculate normal semen rather than blood, although the sperm contained within it is dead and incapable of fertilizing an egg. Vampires therefore cannot reproduce biologically through ordinary sexual reproduction. A new vampire can only be created through the supernatural process known as the Turning.
* Vampires Can Become Sexually Aroused—Under Specific Conditions
Vampire physiology is closely tied to their consumption of blood. Male vampires generally maintain erections only when they have recently fed, as the increased blood volume circulating through their bodies allows blood to reach the genital tissues normally. As their blood supply diminishes, maintaining an erection becomes increasingly difficult.
Ultimately, the message of the VAMP Initiative is simple: vampires are a people, not a stereotype. They possess extraordinary abilities and unusual biological needs, but they also possess individual personalities, cultures, morals, relationships, and choices. Some are dangerous, some are benevolent, and most simply want to live their immortal lives without being hunted or condemned for what they are.
The eldest vampire of Gravesbury has therefore made his life's work not the control of his fellow vampires, but helping humans understand them—and helping vampires understand the humans among whom they now openly live.
