Witches are born with an innate magical affinity, thus every witch is capable of learning general spellcraft, potions, rituals, and enchantments, but each is born with one magical discipline that comes naturally to them.
This affinity shapes how their magic manifests, what spells are easiest for them to master, and often influences their personality and role within witch society.
While they can study other branches of magic not to do with any specific discipline, magic connected to their birth affinity/discipline will always remain their greatest strength.
A witch's innate affinity is often discovered in childhood, when magic first manifests instinctively—an Earth witch may cause flowers to bloom where they walk, while a Soothsayer might experience vivid prophetic dreams.
Families and covens typically guide young witches toward mentors who share their affinity, allowing them to develop their gifts safely.
No affinity is considered inherently stronger than another.
Each excels in different circumstances: a Life witch may save dozens of lives, a Blood witch may dominate a battlefield, a Necromancer may uncover truths long buried, and a Soothsayer may prevent a catastrophe before it begins.
Together, these diverse magical paths form a balanced and interdependent society in which every type of witch has a vital role to play.
Disciplines / Types of Witches

Time witches cannot truly rewrite history, as time resists major alterations.
Arcane Witches
Arcane witches are born with an unusually pure connection to raw magical energy rather than a specific element or force. They often become the greatest scholars, inventors, and spellcrafters. They are the most powerful of witches and only Arcade witches can bestow their magical abilities or the abilities of another Discipline on non-witches, like ordinary humans, shifters, vampires efc. They can essentially make someone who was not born one, a witch.
Abilities:
- Cast powerful spells from many magical disciplines.

- Manipulate leylines and magical currents.
- Weave complex enchantments that combine multiple schools of magic.
While they lack the absolute mastery a specialist has over their own affinity, Arcane witches possess unmatched versatility and adaptability.
General Witchcraft & Enchantments
While every witch has a particular magical discipline to which they are naturally attuned, witches are not restricted to practicing only the magic associated with their affinity. All witches can study and learn a broad range of general spells, enchantments, rituals, and magical crafts, allowing them to develop a versatile collection of abilities outside their primary discipline.
Witches can create things such as love potions, lucky charms, protective talismans, wards, enchanted objects, and magical brews. A Lunar Witch, for example, might learn to create a talisman capable of protecting someone from vampires, dangerous or predatory fae, or animal shifters who become potentially dangerous during the full moon. Witches of every discipline can also learn the enchantments required to create sun rings, which allow vampires to safely withstand sunlight while wearing them, and moon rings, which allow shifters to retain control of their transformations during the full moon.
Traditional witchcraft also gives witches many magical tools with which to work. Crystals, incense, candles, cauldrons, wands, herbs, and other ritual implements can all be incorporated into spells and ceremonies, with individual witches developing their own preferred methods and practices.
There are, however, certain magical arts that remain exclusive to particular disciplines. Runes, for example, are a specialized form of magic that only Runic Witches can truly read, interpret, and wield. Tarot is more accessible: witches of any discipline can learn the meanings of the cards and perform readings, but only Soothsayer Witches possess the genuine supernatural ability to see glimpses of the future through them. Other witches can interpret the symbolism and use the cards to form possibilities or educated magical impressions about what may lie ahead, but their readings remain uncertain rather than prophetic.
Witches can also learn intimate and romantic enchantments designed to strengthen attraction, restore a person's desire for intimacy, or enhance feelings of closeness between consenting partners. Some spells can conjure magical lubrication for intimate encounters, restore someone's libido even after they have climaxed, or heighten physical pleasure through carefully performed rituals. Other enchantments focus less on physical sensation and more on romantic connection, helping lovers deepen their emotional bonds, strengthen affection, and reinforce the intimacy they share.
Ultimately, a witch's primary affinity determines where their greatest natural power lies—but it does not define the limits of what they can learn. Through study, practice, experimentation, and years of magical experience, witches can become remarkably versatile practitioners capable of mastering many forms of general magic beyond their chosen discipline.
Familiars
In the magical traditions, familiars are supernatural companions who form a magical bond with witches. A familiar is much more than an ordinary pet: it is a creature capable of sensing, carrying, and sometimes even assisting with magical energy.
Familiars can take many forms. Cats, ravens, owls, foxes, snakes, frogs, dogs, bats, and other animals are common choices, although unusual or magical creatures can also become familiars. Some familiars may even be spirits or fae creatures that deliberately choose to accompany a witch.
A familiar's relationship with its witch is typically mutual rather than one-sided. The familiar provides companionship, protection, heightened awareness, and assistance with spellwork, while the witch provides care, magical energy, protection, and a place within their household or coven. Over time, the bond can become exceptionally strong, allowing witch and familiar to sense one another's emotions and, in particularly powerful bonds, communicate through thoughts or impressions.
Familiars can also assist with magic in subtle ways. A familiar might help a witch locate a magical object, sense another supernatural being nearby, carry a spell or enchantment, guard a ritual space, or act as an anchor for a witch's magical energy. More experienced familiars may even participate directly in rituals, lending their own supernatural energy to strengthen a spell.
Importantly, not every witch has a familiar, and having one is not necessarily an indication of magical power. Some witches simply prefer practicing magic alone, while others form lifelong bonds with familiars who become treasured companions and members of their families. In Gravesbury, a witch's familiar is often regarded as one of the most intimate and meaningful relationships they can have.
The Lifespan of Witches
Typically, witches of every discipline can live up to 300 years and will age a lot more slowly and gradually than normal humans. By age 100, for example, they can still appear as if they are in their 30s with them only starting to age to the point of looking visibly closer to reaching 300. This does not mean witches cannot die before reaching 300, many can and will, by whether by disease such as cancer and heart disease, natural causes like heart attacks and passing away in their sleep, or by murder or getting into accidents, same as any human.
